Business expansion in the time of COVID.

In the food service industry, while many have unfortunately closed shop or downsized in the past two years, a remarkable few saw things in a different light and thrived. DATCHE client, entrepreneurs Kane Chua and wife Yuri of Cafe Elim shared their story.

Cafe Elim, a Japanese-Korean specialty bakeshop didn’t have an easy start back in 2019. “It took us more than a year to be accepted in the market because of our unique food offerings. And just when things were starting to pick-up, the lockdown began in March 2020.” Kane shared.

Kane and Yuri knew that even prior to the pandemic, a big chunk of their sales was from take-outs and deliveries. “We weren’t on the popular food delivery apps then yet, but we had a good following.” added Chua.

While others temporarily closed for the lockdown, Cafe Elim continued its operations. The restaurateurs focused on improving their systems so they can continue to sell despite the manpower, supplies and logistical challenges that time.

“Our Uniwell ePOS was quite handy in making sure that sales were accurately recorded even without us on site. It also helped us with inventory management and allowed us to have a smooth production flow so we can fulfill orders,” shared Yuri, the designer and baker behind the brand.


Kane and Yuri revealed that their three year-old cafe has in fact more than doubled its sales during the pandemic. They also moved to a bigger store space in preparation for the market reopening.

“Direct orders through Viber or Messenger have been consistent and strong for us, and yield higher margins too. And so we’re working on improving our online selling now more than ever.”

“Our strategy is to make sure that all possible automation systems are in place so we can be on top of our game in operations and in customer engagement — whatever the market situation is. Online selling isn’t a piece of cake, but with the right tools, we’re sure we can make it work.” concluded Kane.
